New Music Review: Debra Perry & Majestic Praise
West Michigan's multi-talented Debra L. Perry and her ensemble Majestic Praise have a new, praise-filled recording showcasing a mixture of styles.
"Conqueror" takes hold with its ear-grabbing title track featuring syncopated percussion and lyrical phrasing right from the scriptures.
Perry includes numerous Grand Rapids area musicians whom she has worked with through the years. The Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Choir contributes on "You Are God." A GRPS music teacher, Perry singles out the Coit Creative Arts Academy Honors Choir in "Look At Me Now" with a danceable sound and a bit of hip-hop style lyric.
A gifted composer and arranger in her own right, Perry coaxed anthems written by Majestic Praise members Avalon Cutts-Jones ("This Joy," "For Your Grace"), and Robert Kelly ("His Glory Reigns").
Two cover songs contain some interesting twists: "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High" carries a gospel flair which takes the song even "higher." The hymn "It Is Well (When Peace Like A River)" has an additional vocal arrangement with words committing the singer to following God's leading.
The album was recorded at Lighthouse Full Life Center Church in Grand Rapids where Perry is musical director. Some additional recording and production work was completed at Joint Heir Music Studio in Grand Rapids, a facility Perry founded and operates.
Her most recent honor: Perry was an engineer for the song "Listen" on the latest album by Grand Rapids pastor and recording artist Bishop Marvin Sapp. The album is nominated for a Grammy Award, in which Perry can share at least a small part! (Grammy winners will be announced Jan. 22).
