Terry’s Picks: October 2018

Written by Terry DeBoer on . Posted in Local

EVENTSWest Michigan Christian News writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for the area's faith-based arts/entertainment/enrichment events over the coming month. Here are three highlights for October:

*Modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty and their nationwide "Sing!" tour visit the area at 7pm Fri. Oct. 12 at Jenison Center for the Arts, 8375 20th Ave. Jenison. The Northern Ireland natives are part of the creative forces behind such well-traveled recent-vintage hymns as "In Christ Alone" and "Power of the Cross" which successfully bridge the gap between traditional and contemporary worship songs. They also host a large worship music conference each year in Nashville attended by worship leaders and musicians from around the world. Tickets range from $26 to $32, and are available online. Call the box office at 616-667-3602.

* Michael Jr. "More Than Funny" – The live comedy concert/film mixed with real life stories features Grand Rapids native Michael (Wright) Jr. The film is presented in area theatres for one night only at 7pm Thurs. Oct. 18. Known for his "clean comedy" approach, Michael Jr. has appeared on national TV and performed at LaughFest in Grand Rapids several years ago. The film is showing at the AMC Grand Rapids Megastar (on Alpine Ave NW), Celebration Cinema Rivertown (in Grandville) and the Kalamazoo 10 in Kalamazoo. Tickets are $12. *4 One Quartet – The Southern gospel quartet performs at 6pm Sat. Oct. 20 at Hudsonville Reformed Church, 3950 Highland Dr. in Hudsonville. The Michigan-based group's most recent album is titled "Refreshed." They've performed to gospel fans from across the country at the National Quartet Convention in Tennessee. One of the members of the 4 One Quartet is Hank Vanderloon, who for many years was part of the noted Heralders and later managed and sang bass for the Anchormen of Fair Haven. Also on the bill is the Justified Quartet from the Flint area. For more information online.
