New Music Review: “The Second City – Part 1”
The busy West Michigan native Steven Malcolm has released "The Second City – Part 1," the first of four extended-play projects scheduled for 2018.
Calling the four new songs "an ode to my past," Malcolm says these selections are his most biographical to date.
His father was a Jamaican immigrant who was deported when young Steven was just 10 years old. The elder Malcolm had been born in Montego Bay, also known as "The Second City." But the title also refers to the transformed new life found in Christ (a brief video testimony is available online.
Other songs include "Not To Us/Good Love" with guests Taylor Hill and Michael Anderson. "Rodeo" takes on a Jamaican theme and also includes Hill. The hip-hop tune "Watch" features an accompanying video version, watch online.
The fourth song is titled "Fadeaway."
The Wyoming Park High School graduate honed his musical artistry during his time as a worship leader at The Urban Edge Fellowship in Grand Rapids. His first national album release came in early 2017, helping him to a spot on the Winter Jam tour and scoring several hits on Christian rhythmic charts. He eventually nabbed him three Dove Award nominations and a successful performance on the nationally-televised ceremonies last fall.
Upcoming concert dates include April 27 at Soul Blast in Battle Creek https://www.soulblast.org/ and tentatively at the Unity Christian Music Festival in Muskegon in August.
