The award-winning inspirational-pop band MercyMe is coming to West Michigan Nov. 29 for a special Christmas concert with the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra.Tickets for the general public are expected to go on sale May 16.
The concert – to be held in the spacious sanctuary of Resurrection Life Church in Grandville – follows a similar holiday event held there last December. The local symphony teamed with singer-songwriter Michael W. Smith and several church musicians, performing to a sold out audience of around 4,000.
"We're still finalizing what our involvement will be," said Ken Reynolds, the church's associate pastor of worship of the role he and fellow church artists may fill. "I think it may be similar (to the Smith Christmas concert), but don't know yet for sure."
MercyMe has been a fixture for Christian music fans for more than 15 years when their signature ballad, "I Can Only Imagine," became a mega-hit on mainstream music charts.
Since then, lead singer and songwriter Bart Millard has led the group to dozens of No. 1 Christian radio songs and multiple music awards.
The band is nominated for two 2016 American Music Awards, with ceremonies scheduled for May 22 on ABC-TV.
The band has released two Christmas albums: the latest is last year's "MercyMe, It's Christmas," which included both secular and faith-oriented holiday songs.
The band has a similar Christmas concert scheduled in December with the Dallas Pops.
Grand Rapids Symphony subscribers get the first crack at tickets beginning May 2, when they are offered as an "add-on" to symphony season ticket purchases.
