Busy Fall Concert Scene Has Plenty of Highlights

West MatthewMatthew West comes to West Michigan October 11 This fall brings a good selection of Christian music concerts to West Michigan - in churches and other venues of all types and sizes.

Take September, for example.

*One of the hottest new worship songs these days is “Reckless Love.” The anthem just scored a 2018 Dove Award nomination as overall Song of the Year. The songwriter, worship leader Cory Asbury of Bethel Music, comes to Grand Rapids for a 7:30pm Thur. Sept. 20 concert in Christ Chapel at Cornerstone University. Also performing is fellow Bethel artist Kalley Heiligenthal. Tickets range from $35 to $18; available online

*The “Love Unstoppable” tour featuring gospel artists Martha Munizzi, Bryan Popin, Orlando Rodriguez and SJXtreme is set for 7pm Fri. Sept. 21 at Fountain St. Church, 24 Fountain St. NE. Munizzi has won Stellar, Dove and Oasis awards during her distinguished career. General admission is $42.50, and $50 the day of the concert. Available in advance online

*John Mark McMillan (“Oh, How He Loves”) performs at 8pm Mon. Sept. 10 at the Covenant Fine Arts Center of Calvin College. General admission tickets are $18 and available online or at the

*Singer-songwriter Mat Kearney is performing at 6:30pm Sun. Sept. 16 at The Intersection, 133 Grandville Ave. SW in Grand Rapids. His new song “Face to Face,” has been a mild hit on Christian radio. General admission tickets are $28.50, available in advance online.

*Worship is also the focus for singer Lauren Daigle, performing at 7:30pm Sun. Oct 7 in DeVos Performance Hall, on Monroe St. in downtown Grand Rapids. Daigle is a multiple Dove winner and is nominated this year for her song “O’ Lord,” which builds on her signature tune of several years ago, “How Can It Be?” Tickets range from $25 to $75, and each online ticket purchase comes with a physical copy of her upcoming album “Look Up Child” (there will be emailed instructions on how to redeem the album).

*Jesus Culture and associated artists, based in a Sacramento, Calif. area church, have assembled for a “Living With A Fire” tour which descends at 7pm Tues. Oct 16 at Grand Rapids First, 2100 44th St. SW in Wyoming. Among the artists participating: Kim Walker-Smith, Chris Quiltala, Chris McClarney and Bryan & Katy Torwalt, all of whom also have solo albums. Tickets range from $42.50 (early entry and pre-show Q&A with artists), to $26.50 general admission. A friends & family 4-pack is available for $22.50 per ticket. Order online


*Veteran Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman has a “Solo Greatest Hits” concert at 7:30pm Thur. Nov. 1 at Ridgepoint Community Church, 340 104th Ave. Holland. General admission tickets are $26, with group rates available. VIP Tickets (early entry and Q&A) $75. Available online

*Turning to Southern gospel, the popular Collingsworth Family travels back to West Michigan at 6pm Sat. Oct. 6 at the Jenison Center for the Arts, 8375 20th Ave. in Jenison. Tickets range from $27 to $15, and can be purchased online via

*Funny man John Crist with his church-infused humor performs two shows – 2:30 and 7:30pm Sat. Nov. 3 in Christ Chapel of Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids. Limited ticket availability. Check online

*Modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty are scheduled to bring their “Sing!” national tour to Jenison Center for the Arts in Jenison at 7pm Fri. Oct. 12. Ticket information online

*Newsboys United – The current band plus former members Peter Furler and Phil Joel stop in at 7pm Fri. Nov. 30 in Grand Rapids First Church, 2100 44th St. SW in Wyoming. Also on the bill are Zealand and Adam Agee. Tickets are $25 general admission, group rates available as are VIP and premium ticket packages online
