Terry’s Picks: November 2018
West Michigan Christian web writer Terry DeBoer surveys the landscape for the area's faith-based arts/entertainment/enrichment events over the coming month. Here are three highlights for November:* Calvin College Alumni Choir – The vocal ensemble, under the direction of guest conductor Randy Van Wingerden, presents its fall concert "All That Has Life and Breath" at 8pm Sat. Nov. 10 in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium of Calvin College in Grand Rapids. Admission is free, tickets are not required. A free-will offering will be received. The choir will also participate in several Christian Reformed church worship services in the coming year, including Jan. 20 at Ridgewood CRC in Jenison; Jan. 27 at Eastern Ave. CRC and Feb. 10 at Shawnee Park CRC, both in Grand Rapids.
*"The Ripple Effect"- The documentary film on the effects of suicide is shown at 3:30pm Sun. Nov. 11 in Standale Reformed Church, 202 Cummings Ave. NW, Grand Rapids. The film highlights the life of Kevin Hines, who attempted suicide at age 19 but survived and went on to become a world-renowned mental health advocate. A post-film discussion is facilitated by the Mental Health Foundation of West Michigan. There is no admission charge, a free-will offering will be received. The event is part of a church fall series. *"The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe" – The stage play, based on the first book in C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia" series, is presented Nov. 15-Dec. 8 in Master Arts Theatre, 75 77th St. SW. It's the classic story of the four Pevensie children and their journey to a land of fantasy and wonder. Curtain times are 7:30pm Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with 2pm Saturday matinees. (No performance on Thanksgiving, although there is a special matinee on Fri. Nov. 23). Tickets are $17 adult, $15 senior citizens and students.
