New Music Review: “Yes You Can” by Marvin Sapp
West Michigan pastor and gospel music artist Marvin Sapp has released a new song "Yes You Can" from his forthcoming album.Sapp, 47, is pastor of Lighthouse Full Life Center Church on Madison Ave. SE in Grand Rapids. But he is nationally known for his award-winning music prowess, with several chart-topping songs and best-selling albums to his credit.
"Yes You Can," a hopeful, medium-tempo ballad, had already reached the top 20 of the Billboard gospel music chart less than a month after its release.
The song provides encouragement that God's strength can deliver a believer through a difficult life circumstance.
"It's stylistically and lyrically different from his recent hits such as 'Never Would Have Made It' and "Testimony,'" said Bil Carpenter, a longtime gospel music observer and author of "Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia" (Backbeat Books).
"After going through so much personal tragedy and pain (Sapp lost his wife to cancer in 2010), it sounds like now he is a happier place in this new song and that's a very welcome sound to my ears."
A sample from the prayerful lyrics: "You held my hand and encouraged me to stand. And when they said I couldn't do it, I heard you say, 'Yes, you can.' I overcame and every day I'm getting stronger. I'm no longer doubting, now here's my time to tell somebody, 'God says, yes you can.'"
The full album, "You Shall Live," is expected to be released this summer.
